Trebek has been asked many times how he would perform as a contestant on his own show. In an article in Esquire Magazine he answered this way:
“And I tell them I would do fairly well among senior citizens, but against a good thirty-year-old I would have trouble because I cannot recall information as quickly as I used to.”
On the subject of gambling he once said
“I don’t gamble, because winning a hundred dollars doesn’t give me great pleasure. But losing a hundred dollars pisses me off.”
As most of us who have ever watched Jeopardy! know, Alex seems to know a lot about a lot! Here’s a couple of things he’s said about observation, curiosity, and the inherent expert in all of us:
“I’m curious about everything. Even subjects that don’t interest me.”
“We are all experts in our own little niches.”
For a man who talks for a living, Trebek knows the importance of being quiet:
“It’s very important in life to know when to shut up. You should not be afraid of silence.”
After one taxing episode of Celebrity Jeopardy! Alex said
“I’m going home and putting a gun in my mouth.”
Alex has taken his show all over the world. During a break in filming in Cairo, he told his audience
“I wasn’t sunburned -but I was just suffering from heat prostration.”
He recently said on retiring
“30 years has a nice ring to it.”
That caused quite an uproar, so later on he added this
“Saying that I’ve THOUGHT about it doesn’t mean that I’m DOING it.”
Nik Spurgetis says
“I’m going home and putting a gun in my mouth.”
Um, that was Will Ferrell PLAYING Alex Trebek on Saturday Night Live…
Doug says
Ya I’m noticing some discrepancies in some of this. But like Alex said “it’s important to know when to keep your mouth shut” so ——————.
